Collaboration for the best school

”Collaboration for the best school” (CBS) is a government mission led by the Swedish National Agency for Education and is aimed at schools with major challenges. The goal is to address poor results in school and goal attainment in preschool and the preschool class, including both quality and equity.

The mission is primarily aimed at principals who are considered to have difficulty improving results and goal attainment in pedagogical activities on their own. Since its inception in 2016, the CBS work has been conducted as a unique partnership between the National Agency for Education, principals, and higher education institutions.

The scientific support for “Collaboration for the best school”

Eight higher education institutions have been selected by the Swedish National Agency for Education to anchor the work of CBS in science and proven experience. These are Stockholm University, Dalarna University, Karlstad University, Mid Sweden University, Uppsala University, University of Gothenburg, Umeå University, and Linnaeus University. These universities contribute together with both local and national R&D support for ”Collaboration for the best school”. The national R&D support is led and organized through the National R&D Center ”Collaboration for the best school” at Stockholm University.

Local R&D support

The various universities contribute to the work of CBS locally together with participating principals, schools and preschools around the country. The local R&D support means, among other things, supporting the current improvement work during a three-year improvement process. This is done with the help of tailor-made development efforts based on a broad knowledge base. For this purpose, the activities are organized in special R&D teams under the leadership of a CBS manager at each respective university.

National R&D support

The higher education institutions also jointly contribute to national R&D support through research anchoring of, research participation in, and joint learning about ”Collaboration for the best school”. This means, among other things, contributing to competence development for the National Agency for Education, coordination of the universities’ respective development efforts, and building new knowledge with relevance for the mission. The activities are led and organized through the National R&D Center ”Collaboration for the best school” at Stockholm University.

Scientific council

As part of the national R&D support, a scientific council with representatives from the participating universities is also included. The members of the scientific council are responsible for supporting the universities’ R&D teams and the development efforts that are being conducted, as well as for building new knowledge about school development in areas with major challenges. For this purpose, a special database has also been created that includes all documents generated within the framework of ”Collaboration for the best school”.
